I’ve got some friends who are cars – that’s right cars. They came to me when I was trying to work out how to read my son Simon bible stories. My son was two at the time and he loved playing with toy cars much more than reading or listening to stories. So I wondered how I could put cars in the bible!
Now most of you would know there were no cars in bible times. Moses didn’t ride through the desert, or King David ride a motorcycle. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, not a Holden. So I was left with a problem – how could I get cars into the bible stories?
Fortunately God sometimes gives us great ideas [He’s made us to be creative like him!] I thought about my own growing up in church. Sometimes I was bored at church and didn’t want to be there. I wondered if the cars in the church car park felt the same way. I mean if I was a car I’d much rather be out on the road, or bashing through the bush, than parked in a car park all morning.
But then I started listening to the stories that were being told in the church. They were fascinating stories, stories that really made me wonder and think. Jesus walking on water, healing sick people, feeding thousands. Jesus also told these riddles about what heaven was like and how you could get there! Suddenly worship wasn’t so boring anymore. These stories changed me!
What if there was an old, old car in the church car park, who could tell the new cars all these stories Jesus told. Wow, they wouldn’t be bored anymore, they’d be excited! Not only that but it would help them to be kind to one another, to help others, to make sure things were fair!
But wait, what if this old car, could tell the stories with cars in them instead of people, then the new cars would be really interested. I had my idea, and Simon loved it! So Old Mr T, Luxurious Lucy, Impossible Issi and a whole host of other cars were born in Car Park Parables!
It soon dawned on me that this idea was too good to keep to myself, so now these cars have their own books and a DVD so you can share them too!
Follow their adventures as they confront a strange new car in The Strange Car, find out what they do when one of them turns up smelling like pig poo in The Prodigal Ute, or get all their adventures on the DVD Old Mr T. and Friends.
I wonder what sort of car Jesus would have rode into Jerusalem with? Hang on, that’s given me a great idea for a story!
